Laws to be aware of before getting behind the wheel of your cart
We know you’re excited to hit the pavement in your tricked out golf cart. But behind the wheel of any vehicle, you’ve got to mind the rules of the road– and golf carts are no exception. The rules may vary according to your state, so here are some general safety tips to keep you on the good side of the law:
The minimum age to drive a golf cart is 15 years old (in most states)
Golf carts are great for drivers of all ages, but you may still need a license. In Pensacola, FL, for example, the legal golf cart driving age is 14. This will vary from state to state, so check with your local DMV to see if you need a permit.
Manage your MPH
Golf carts are classified as low-speed vehicles – they generally don’t exceed speeds of 25 mph, and may only drive on public roads limited to 35 mph or less. However, many modders aren’t content with the speed output of their battery-powered Club Car engine parts, and choose to outfit their carts with gasoline-powered automobile engines.
While notably faster (and pretty cool, too) these gas-powered carts might need to be certified to be eligible for road use. Again, check with your local DMV to see what’s allowed.
Passenger limit
Golf carts generally seat up to two golfers (plus clubs). Of course you can install a rear golf cart seat to accommodate extra passengers, but make sure you’re authorized to do so where you’re driving.
Practice smart road safety!
And while golf carts may not be cars exactly, all the same common sense applies. Don’t stand up while the cart’s in motion; slow down on turns; keep arms and legs inside the vehicle – that sort of stuff.
Make sure your golf cart head lights, tail lights, rearview mirrors, and brakes are all installed and in good, working condition. These are all essential safety features for keeping you and your passengers safe and sound.
If you take these tips to heart, you should have no trouble cruising the streets in your tricked out golf cart. Remember to be safe, and have fun!
